The Health Promoting Built Environment (HPBE) Taskforce brings together an international network of practitioners, researchers, designers and policymakers who are committed to creating health and care environments that actively support people’s wellbeing. Hosted by the International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals and Health Services (HPH), the Taskforce explores how hospitals, healthcare organisations and (care)homes can be planned and designed so that health promotion becomes a natural part of everyday life.
Its work focuses on making buildings more accessible, supportive and enabling for all people, regardless of ability. This includes attention to layout and movement through a building, access to green space, and the quality of light, sound and air. The Taskforce also looks at how spaces can strengthen social connection, make healthy choices easier, and give people a greater sense of autonomy and control.
Through collaboration across countries and disciplines, the Taskforce shares knowledge, develops guidance, and supports healthcare organisations in understanding how the built environment influences health. Current activities include eLearning, webinars, resources, and research on the barriers and enablers for integrating design into HPH operations.
